A 21-year-old man identified simply as Usman Jafar, who impersonated an army officer was almost lynched to death for robbing a woman of iPhone 7 Plus in Warri, Delta State.
Jafar, an indigene of Adamawa State was caught the following day after the woman he robbed identified him when he visited Robinson Plaza, a mobile phones market to wipe off the phone’s information.
According to reports, Jafar who initially escaped from his captors was stoned and severely stabbed leaving injuries on his face and other body parts.
“But the mob gave him a hot chase from the point of the incident until he was caught near the home of Major General David Ejoor, an ex-Chief of Army Staff. The mob descended on him again and beat him to a pulp,” a witness said.
It was learnt that some of the attackers injured the suspect with dagger and knives and were determined to kill him before soldiers attached to the General, as well as police operatives, came to his rescue and dispersed the crowd.
“A few minutes later, a military van from 3 Battalion of the Nigerian Army in Effurun, in the Uvwie Local Government Area of the state came and whisked the suspect away to their barracks for interrogation.
Military sources told our correspondent that the suspect was discovered to be an impersonator during interrogation.
The Commanding Officer of 3 Battalion, Major Ahmed Abdulkadir, confirmed to our correspondent that the suspect was an impersonator.
